It might be a little known fact but the Dune du Pilat west of Bordeaux is the tallest sand dune in Europe. Its nestled alongside beautiful scenery including enormous pine forests, the Alantic Ocean, Archachon Bay and it even has a peninsula to boot.
Its free to climb the dune and its extremely rewarding to take in the breathtaking panoramic views from the top.

The Dune du Pilat is moving inland albeit at a slow rate. It has over a million visitors a year and its easy to see why.

Really interesting post, I’d never heard of this super-size dune, but we hardly ever get to Bordeaux. Great views from the top!
Many thanks for the follow on our Bikers Guide to the Dordogne! 🙂
